PINKZONE COMPATIBLE HEART RATE MONITORS

ANT+

Our PinkZONE system uses heart rate monitors (HRMs) which use the ANT+ wireless communications protocol. This is a different wireless communication technology than standard bluetooth. Therefore, ANT+ HRMs won’t work with many phone apps which only support standard bluetooth. See below for info on dual band HRMs which work with both ANT+ and bluetooth.

DUAL BAND (ANT+ AND BLUETOOTH)

If you want a heart rate monitor that you can use with our PinkZONE system and with any app on your phone, you will need a dual band HRM. Dual band means that the HRM is compatible with both ANT+ and bluetooth wireless transmission protocols. This is because phone apps use bluetooth and our PinkZONE system uses the more advanced ANT+ wireless transmission protocol. There are both chest straps and wrist bands that are dual band HRMs. An excellent, affordable dual band chest strap HRM is the Wahoo TICKR, which we stock for you to purchase. Our favorite dual band wrist band HRMs are the Mio FUSE and the new Mio SLICE.

FORM FACTORS

There are different form factors for HRMs including chest straps, wrist bands and even in-ear HRMs now being built into some earbuds.

  • Chest Straps: Chest straps are the most accurate type of HRM. The chest straps that we stock for use with our PinkZONE system are the Garmin HRM3 premium and the Wahoo TICKR. We chose these because of their comfort, quality, performance, and price. The Garmin HRM3 is an ANT+ only HRM while the Wahoo TICKR is a dual band ANT+ and bluetooth HRM (see below for more info on dual band HRMs).
  • Wrist Bands: Wrist band HRMs are convenient. Unfortunately, they are not as accurate and reliable as chest straps. Even the most accurate wrist band HRMs give very poor heart rate readings at times when performing exercises which use your arm muscles (for example, bicep curls). This is because contraction of your arm muscles cause bloodflow to be restricted to your wrist, which in turn causes wrist band HRMs to incorrectly read your heart rate as being much lower than it actually is. Therefore, we recommend using a chest strap HRM. Nevertheless, if you want a wrist band HRM we really like the Mio FUSE and the new Mio SLICE, which are both dual band HRMs (see below). The Mio SLICE is the first and only device to date that is an all-day heart rate monitor rather than just an activity tracker during times when you aren’t working out.
